The present invention provides a method of inhibiting the replication of human immunodeficiency virus in cells which are infected with HIV comprising administering to the cells a replication inhibiting amount of interleukin-10. Also provided is a parenteral method of the administration of interleukin-10 administration. Further provided is a method of inhibiting retroviral replication in a human subject infected by a retrovirus, comprising administering to the subject an inhibiting amount of interleukin-10, including the retrovirus is.
