The gas filling control has a data memory fitted at the gas supply inlet connection (10) for the vehicle. The memory (22) may be magnetic, electromagnetic, optical or electronic, and holds data relating to the gas reservoir fitted to the vehicle. The connecting hose (6) from the bulk gas storage incorporates a reader (19) which, when it is brought into proximity with the memory on the filler inlet, reads the data stored there, and delivers the data to a central computer, which determines whether or not to operate the valve (14) in the gas supply line to permit or prevent supply.
