METHOD FOR WORKING FRONT END OF OPTICAL FIBER

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for working the front end of an optical fiber adequate for use for illumination and display devices. SOLUTION: The front end of the optical fiber 1 is worked in such a manner that its sectional shape is formed to a concave spherical surface. By which, the orientation characteristic of the exit light from the front end of the optical fiber 1 is determined in accordance with the ratio of the areas of the light refraction part 7a and light total reflection part 7b of the worked surface. In such a case, the sectional shape of the front end of the optical fiber 1 is conceivably formed to a semi-elliptical shape facing sideways when viewed from the front to narrow the orientation characteristic of the light emitted from the front end of the optical fiber. The sectional shape of the front end of the optical fiber is otherwise formed to a semi-elliptical shape facing longitudinally when viewed from the front to widen the orientation characteristic of the light emitted from the front end of the optical fiber.
