PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a large capacity water heater which makes it possible to effectively discriminate the fault of a hot water circulating pump for circulating the hot water in a hot water storage tank. SOLUTION: This large capacity water heater comprises heating circulating systems 6a to 6d for heating and circulating the hot water of a hot water storage tank, a hot water supply circulating pipeline for supplying the hot water in the tank to respective hot water supply destinations, a hot water circulating pump 18 for circulating the hot water in the pipeline, and a hot water circulating temperature sensor 26 for detecting the hot water in the pipeline. The heater also comprises a pump drive control means 30 for driving the pump 18 when the detected temperature of the sensor 26 becomes a circulation starting temperature or lower and stopping the pump 18 when it becomes the circulation stopping temperature or higher, and a hot water circulating pump fault discriminator 31 for obtaining the detected hot water circulating temperature after 30min from when the detected hot water circulating temperature becomes the starting temperature or lower in the state that the systems 6a to 6d are all stopped and discrimination of the fault of the pump 18 when the temperature is the pump fault discriminating reference temperature or lower which is lower than the starting temperature.
