PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To remove contamination with little wear of a head and to obtain good compatibility for the sliding property of a tape for a head by specifying the thickness of a cleaning layer and specifying the squareness ratio. SOLUTION: A lower coating layer essentially containing a nonmagnetic inorg. powder and a binder is formed on a nonmagnetic base body, and further, a cleaning layer containing a binder and an inorg. powder which is at least a ferromagnetic powder is formed thereon. The thickness of the cleaning layer is specified to 0.05 to 1.0μm and the squareness ratio defined as the ratio of the residual magnetic flux density Br to the max. magnetic flux density Bm in the magnetization curve is specified to 0.6-0.98. Further, it is preferable that the inorg. powder in the cleaning layer contains 1 to 45wt.% of an abrasive having >=6 Mohs' hardness to 100wt.% of the ferromagnetic powder.
