PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To retrieve the instructed area of image data at high speed and to edit the area of a delicate image signal. SOLUTION: The original image marked by a marker is prescreened (S1), the read image signal is binarized, data for area from which the binary signal is thinned is prepared, and further, data for retrieval from which the data for area is thinned is prepared. These data are stored in a memory (S3), the area instructed by the marker is decided based on the stored data (S4) and the area code showing the area is generated (S5). Next, the original image is read again (S6), editing data is read based on the area code for the read image signal (S7), the editing data is synthesized with the read original image and the synthesized data is outputted.
