The system includes a sensor arrangement (8) arranged after an exhaust fume cleaning device (12), for determining a concentration of exhaust fume components, corresponding to an operating condition of the engine or an operating condition of the exhaust fume cleaning device. The function of the exhaust fume cleaning device is tested in response to an output signal provided by the sensor arrangement. The output signal undergoes an integration processing, whereby the function of the exhaust fume cleaning device is determined either directly in response to the output signal or to the integrated value.
