A sliding unit for a metallurgical container (2) is disclosed. The unit includes a stationary refractory plate (14) comprising a working surface mounted under a pour hole (12) of the metallurgical container (2), at least two movable refractory plates (16, 18) each having a working surface, at least two guiding edges (22) and at least two bearing edges (24), drive means (26) for sliding the two movable plates (16, 18) under the stationary plate in a plate changing direction so that one plate replaces the other opposite the pour hole (12), and means (20) for sealingly engaging the movable refractory plates (16, 18) with the stationary plate (14). A seal (30) is provided at least between the adjacent bearing edges (24) of two movable plates (16, 18), said seal being made of a material that is sufficiently resilient to compensate for flatness defects on the edges of the movable plates, and different from the liquid metal.
