A feed unit (1) exerts a feeding force on the tool holder to move it in the direction of the workpiece. A feed control unit (2) exerts a braking force counteracting the feed unit force on the tool holder. A regulating unit (3) incorporates a micro-computer (50) which activates, inactivates and/or moderates the control unit brake effect according to a fed-in programme.
