A turbine shaft for steam machines, aligned along an axis of rotation (2), comprises a first axially aligned region (4) with a maximum radius R1 and a 2nd axially aligned region (5) with a maximum radius R2 greater than R1. The first region (4) has a 1st base material for use at a 1st temperature, and the 2nd region (5) has a 2nd base material for use at a 2nd temperature lower than the 1st. A steel alloy containing 8-12.5 wt.% Chromium (Cr) is used as the base materials whose austenisation temperature is the same in each case. Also claimed is the production of the above turbine shaft.
