The system includes a main exhaust fume conductor (12), a shunt exhaust fume conductor (32), and a valve arranged in the shunt conductor. The operating position of an exhaust fume throttle (20) is movable at a lower engine load, i.e. partial load, to seal the flow in the main exhaust fume conductor. The valve in the shunt conductor is a pressure limit valve (34), and a heat exchanger (36) is preferably arranged in the shunt conductor, whereby the cooling water of the engine flows through a low-temperature side of the heat exchanger. The pressure limit valve is preferably a plate valve, which can be arranged before or after the heat exchanger.
