The front buffer (1) or bumper (2) in rail or road vehicles is fixed to a slide which moves in the line of travel and acts as switch so that when depressed it opens its contacts (4,5) otherwise closed when the slide extends. Pretensioned coil compression springs (6) in the two chambers (7) forming part of the slide can be re-tensioned e.g by track stop when the slide retracts until the contacts break apart so that once the track stop is freed, the slide necessarily springs back out to re-close the switch. A second manually button-operated (8) switch with contacts (9,10) may be connected in series to the first switch.
