A glide head (10) for testing rigid disk media includes a thin-film piezoelectric sense element (16) integrated with an air bearing slider. The sensor has high bandwidth and resolution and is therefore capable of detecting collisions between the slider and asperities on the disk media while discriminating such asperity hits from head excitations arising from other mechanical vibrations or air bearing instabilities.
