<p>A method and apparatus for rapidly charging a battery is described to reduce internal heat generation. In the preferred battery charging method a charge cycle is employed wherein a direct charging current pulse (10.1) is followed by a small wait period (12.1) after which a short discharge pulse (13.1) is applied followed in turn by a first wait period (15.1) during which there is neither a charging nor a discharging of the battery. The first wait period is altered by a first pack of high frequency alternating current pulses (14.1A) at a DC voltage level equivalent to that for an open circuit battery voltage. The first pack of high frequency pulses are selected to enhance a mixing action at the battery electrodes. A second discharge pulse (16.1) is then applied followed by a second wait period (18.1) which is altered by a second pack of high frequency alternating current pulses (14.1B). These latter pulses are selected so that measurement of the battery capacitance can be obtained and an evaluation of the charge of the battery can be derived. The charge cycle can be repeated until a battery parameter attains a desired value indicative of a sufficient battery charge.</p> |
