In a process for making successive measurements on exhaust gases from internal combustion engines powered by a fuel containing alcohol, the exhaust gas is delivered to the analysis system (3) using a first (2) and a second (8) sampling system alternately, and, during one measuring period, the idle sampling system is flushed with a purge gas (17). Also claimed is an apparatus for the above process in which each of two sampling systems (2,8) can be connected in turn through an arrangement of valves (13) to an analysis apparatus (3) and to a device (16) which introduces a purge gas (17) into the appropriate sampling system.
