The method involves reducing the cross-section in one drawing stage using two alternatingly moved clamping slides which grip the external periphery of workpiece. With the aid of the clamping slides the workpiece is continuously drawn in a drawing plane through a drawing ring in the device. For the drawing devices (4.3,4.4) in an adjacent pre-preparation station an auxiliary drawing unit is provided, which consists of an auxiliary drawing ring (2.1) with a gripping device (2.2) for the pivot of the tube commencement. The gripping device is arranged on a hydraulic cylinder (2.3) removable in the tube longitudinal axis direction. In line with the auxiliary drawing unit is provided a device for pressing and dividing the tube commencement pivot. Also in line with the auxiliary drawing unit is a device for positioning one or more plugs.
