PURPOSE:To make it possible to control constant speed running which can follow up variations in traffic volume with a high response by detecting a gradient of a slope during constant speed running, and by correcting a reference value of shift-down relating to a deviation between an actual vehicle speed and a desired vehicle speed in accordance with a detected gradient. CONSTITUTION:A control unit 8 receives detection signals from various sensors and switches 9, 11 through 15 for detecting operating conditions of an engine, and various constant speed running switches 18 through 19, and computes various control signals which are delivered to a throttle valve actuator 4, and speed change solenoids 6a through 6c and a lock up solenoid 7 in an automatic transmission 5 so as to perform control of constant speed running. That is, when a deviation between an actual vehicle speed and a desired vehicle speed exceeds a reference value, a shift-down is carried out. In this arrangement, the control unit 8 detects a gradient of a slope during constant speed running. Further, a reference value of the deviation is corrected in accordance with a detected gradient. |
