Date Apr. 28, 1994Anthraquinone compounds inhibit methane production by methanogenic bacteria in the rumen of ruminant animals, increasing production of volatile fatty acids and feed utilization efficiency. Preferred anthraquinones are unsubstituted anthraquinone, 1-aminoanthraquinone, 1-chloroanthraquinone, 2-chloroanthraquinone, 2-chloro-3-carboxyanthraquinone, 1-hydroxyanthraquinone, and 9,10-dihydroanthraquinone.
