A compact suction device is provided for an internal combustion engine, e.g. a V-type engine. The suction device comprises a casing (21) having an air inlet and a plurality of outlets, a collection chamber (45) in the casing, a plurality of suction pipes (47) in the casing, each suction pipe (47) extending from the collection chamber (45) to a corresponding one of the plurality of outlets, a plurality of swirl ducts (49) extending from the collection chamber (45) to outlet portions of respective ones of the plurality of suction pipes (47), a plurality of swirl control valves (48) in the suction pipes (47) for controlling the flow of air from the collection chamber (45) to the outlet portions through the suction pipes (47) and the swirl ducts (49) and a common shaft (55) for driving the swirl control valves (48).
