The vehicle alternator has a wound rotor (4) and a multi-phase stator (5) connected to the bridge circuit (2) made up of diodes (6) and semiconductor switches (7). The switches are controlled by a controller (3). Preferably the diodes are integrated with a MOSFET switch. In the generator mode the switches short-circuit the diodes, with operation of the switches synchronised to change of state of the diodes. Synchronisation is based on measurement of currents or back emf in different phases of the stator. In addition the angular position of the rotor is measured. In the motor mode for starting of the vehicle's internal combustion engine, the number of revolutions of the rotor in a set time window is counted to determine reversion to generator mode. |
