PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound having a narrow addition molar number distribution and scarcely containing unreacted raw materials and by- products by the addition reaction of an alkylene oxide to an ester compound using a specific catalyst. SOLUTION: (A) An ester alkoxylate, preferably e.g. a compound of the formula (E<1> and G<1> are each a 1-21C alkyl or alkenyl; A is a 2-4C alkylene; (n) is 1-50) is produced by adding (B) a 2-4C alkylene oxide to (C) an ester compound having one or more COOR groups (R is a residue obtained by removing one hydroxyl group from an alcohol or phenol) using (D) a catalyst composed of (i) a compound selected from hydroxide, oxide, organic acid salt or alcoholate of an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal and (ii) a cocatalyst consisting of a simple silica or a silica compound containing at least one kind of atom selected from the atoms of the groups 1, 2, 4, 13 and 15 of the periodic table (excluding N). |
