PRODUCTION OF OILY SUBSTANCE BY DECOMPOSING SYNTHETIC POLYMER

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accelerate the decomposition and liquefaction of a synthetic polymer in a process for thermally decomposing and liquefying the polymer and to thereby improve the productivity of the process by using a specific catalyst. SOLUTION: In this process for producing an oily substance, a synthetic polymer is liquefied by thermal decomposition at 300-600 deg.C in the presence of at least one compd. which generates a free radical under the decomposition conditions and is selecterd from among vic.-diarylalkanes represented by the formula (Ar<1> and Ar<2> are each arom.; and R<1> to R<4> are each alkyl) in an amt. of 0.01-10% of the polymer. Pref. Ar<1> and Ar<2> are each independently phenyl, tolyl, or xylyl.
