SHORT FIBER HAVING LATENTLY FIBRILLATING PROPERTY

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject short fiber capable of providing sufficient softness without greatly damaging fiber tenacity and physical properties of woven fabric, by blending a base polymer with a readily soluble polymer in spinning, fibrillating preferentially the tip part of the fiber when the fiber is subjected to weight-loss processing with a solvent. SOLUTION: This short fiber is obtained by a method for blending a base polymer such as a homopolyethylene terephthalate with a readily soluble polymer (e.g. a polyester copolymerized with 5mol% of 5-sodium sulfoisophthalate) by polymer blending in spinning and cutting the prepared fiber into <=200mm length. The fiber has >=3 fiber number at the tip part of the short fiber when subjected to 10% weight loss processing with a solvent and >=1.3 ratio of the fibril number at the tip of the short fiber to that of a non-tip part of the short fiber.
