PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide staple fibers for stuffing having moisture absorptivity higher than a prescribed value, excellent in bulkiness, light weight and use comfortableness, and useful for thick bedquilts, etc., as a polyester-based fiber obtained by conjugating, etc., of specific polyester copplymers. SOLUTION: This polyester-based staple fiber is obtained by (A) copolymerizing preferably 40-99wt.% of a hydrophilic compound such as polyethylene glycol and conjugating or blending a polyester copolymer containing at least one of (B) a polar group-containing compound such as 5-sodium dimethyl sulfoisophthalate and (C) a crosslinking agent such as trimellitic acid and has >=2% moisture absorptivity after holding in an atmosphere of 30 deg.C×90% RH for 24hrs. A fiber size of the polyester-based fiber is 0.5-30de and fiber length is 10-100mm. Preferably, this fiber has three-dimensional crimp generated by asymmetric cooling, >=3 crimps/25mm crimp number and >=5% crimp degree.
