PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for measuring density of a continuous body of cigarette and apparatus therefor. SOLUTION: The intensities of X-ray transmitting a continuous body are each detected at many height positions of the continuous body and measuring signals corresponding to the intensities are formed by the detection and all measuring signals are converted to only one density signal by treatment. An optical receiver 12 is constituted as a linear array 13 equipped with an X-ray detectors 14.1 to 14.n provided in many rows as to detect density of the continuous body in many height positions of the continuous body and form the corresponding measuring signals S1 to Sn . An evaluation mechanism 16 is constituted so as to treat the measuring signal into the density signal 17.
