PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photolysis catalyst capable of efficiently producing hydrogen by solar rays, not almost increasing a band gap even if finely divided especially in a case using iron oxide and preventing the loss of photocatalytic activity even if a catalyst is suspended in water in a case using titania. SOLUTION: This catalyst for photolysis of water is obtained by including a semiconductor excited by solar rays in a cation or anion exchange laminar compd. and the semiconductor is obtained by supporting 0.01-5wt.% of at least one kind of an element selected from the group consisting of Pt, Ru, Rh, Ir and Ni and/or oxide thereof on at least one kind of oxide of a metal elected from the group consisting of titanium, iron, bismuth, tungsten, cadmium and zinc. |
