Heavy duty liquid detergent compositions containing an anionic surfacant component and a quaternary ammonium fabric-softening agent of formula (I). The anionic surfactant component comprises, by weight of the composition, from about 5 percent to 40 percentof alkyl polyethoxylate sulfates and no more than about 5 percent of alkyl benzene sulfonates. The compositions are substantially clear and isotropic, provide excellent cleaning of soils and provide softening through the wash and anti-static benefits. The compositions preferably also contain a fatty acid component, ethoxylated nonionic surfactant, a detergent builder and enzymes.
