The present invention provides a composition useful for the long-term preservation of wood and composite wood materials against wood damaging and wood destroying materials. The composition contains chemically active component derived from 3-aryl-5,6-dihydro-1,4,2-oxathiazines and their oxides and a suitable vehicle therefor. A method of preserving wood is disclosed in which a fungicidally or bactericidally effective amount of the chemical compound of the present invention is incorporated with a suitable vehicle and applied to the wood substrate to be protected.
