The high building (1) which is ventilated (110) by a fan (120) comprises a ridgepole (2) with an opening (200) which is normally closed when the ventilator system is operating. The back-up ventilation comprises a ridgepole horizontal movable plate (21) extending along the building length. This plate can be disengaged from the opening to enable evacuation of air from the inside to the outside of the building. Automatic controls displace the ridgepole plate into its disengaged position following stoppage of the dynamic ventilation system. The ridgepole plate is pivoted to a series of parallel plates located along the ridgepole. These plates are pivoted about horizontal transverse spindles carried by the roof purlins. These plates are normally inclined to the horizontal and when the ridgepole plate descends under its own weight the pivoting plates hang vertically. The back-up ventilation is automatically operated in case of failure of the ventilation fans.
