The hybrid electric vehicle has an internal combustion engine (40), an electric motor (42), a battery (52) and a battery management system (72). The internal combustion engine and the electric motor are coupled by an electromagnetic coupler (44), which provides electrical and magnetic coupling via the battery management system and the battery. The electromagnetic coupler has an input rotor (64) fixed to the output shaft of the internal combustion engine and an output rotor (66) connected to the rotor of the electric motor. The two rotors of the coupler are electromagnetically coupled. A switch connects the battery to the electromagnetic coupler.
