A fryer comprising a vat with a cooking bath, a food basket and a control panel (33) including control means for automatically controlling a cooking cycle, and first means (40) for selecting a cooking temperature to suit the food to be cooked, and delivering first data on the selected temperature to the control means. The control panel includes second means (42) for selecting a basket load image code (58; 59; 60) and delivering second data on the selected code to the control means. The control means determine the cooking time on the basis of the first and second data. In particular, an automatic deep fryer may thus be achieved.
