A welding unit with welding material control, for use at different voltages, consists of a transformer (18) which can operate at low voltages, and a saturation monitoring unit (25) which interrupts the electrical supply to the welding unit transformer when the current exceeds a threshold value. The monitoring unit pref. monitors the primary current.
