The invention concerns a method of checking a sensor (2) which generates an electrical measuring signal on the basis of a non-electrical physical value. To that end, a test valuator device (3) is used which, when an electrical checking signal is applied, generates a non-electrical physical value which is of the same type as the physical value to be measured by the sensor (2). The test valuator device (3) and the sensor (2) are coupled to one another with respect to the physical value. The electrical checking signal and the electrical test signal are compared with each other. The test valuator device thus simulates a measuring operation of the sensor and the sensor is checked on the basis of its own physical measuring operation, which can be carried out over its entire measuring range.
