<p>Liquid-crystal compounds represented by the general formula (1): Ra-A1-Z1-A2-Z2-A3-(-Z3-A4-)-m-Rb and having a liquid-crystal phase over a wide temperature range, a low viscosity, and an improved threshold voltage; a liquid-crystal composition; and a liquid-crystal display element containing the liquid-crystal composition (1), wherein Ra represents C1-20 alkyl in which at least one -CH2- may be replaced with -O-, etc. and at least one hydrogen atom may be replaced with a halogen atom; Rb is the same as Ra or is halogeno or cyano; A1, A2, A3, and A4 each independently represents a divalent ring group; Z1, Z2, and Z3 each independently represents C2-C4 alkenylene, -COO-, a covalent bond, etc., provided that at least one of Z1, Z2, and Z3 represents C2-C4 alkenylene and at least one of them represents -COO- or -OCO-; and m is 0 or 1.</p> |
