The method involves storage of vehicle-specific data in a database accessible by telephone to the user in possession of a password. The vehicle carries a receiver (20) of paging calls which are relayed to a radio activation unit (26) holding the data in read-only memory. A direction-finding transmitter (30) radiates a carrier signal modulated with the data, which can be picked up and displayed (34) by a tuned portable or stationary receiver (32) e.g. at a Customs post. The activation unit may also produce a command (36) to cut off the fuel supply or prevent restarting of the engine.
