PURPOSE:To stably orient a high-polymer liquid crystal by utilizing a difference in coefft. of linear expansion to apply shearing stresses to the thin film of the high-polymer liquid crystal. CONSTITUTION:A dichloroethane soln. prepd. by dissolving the side chain type high-polymer liquid crystal is applied on a polyethylene terephthalate substrate 3 by using a wiper and is then dried to form the thin film 2. After a UV curing type multifunctional urethane acrylate resin is applied thereon, the coating is dried and is irradiated by UV rays, by which the coating is cured and a high-polymer film 1 is formed. The film is then heated to the glass transition temp. or above or the isotropic transition temp. or above and cooled. As a result, the shearing stresses are generated between the substrate and the high- polymer film by the difference in the coefft. of linear expansion between the substrate and the high-polymer film, by which the shearing stresses are applied to the high-polymer liquid crystal phase. The high-polymer liquid crystal is oriented in this way. |
