<p>Use of a bacterial strain for producing formic acid and/or formate in a culture medium containing a fermentable sugar (I) is claimed, where the strain has a deficiency in the transport or metabolisation of (I), comprises an active pathway for the degradation of (I) by pyruvate formate lyase, and is capable of converting most of (I) to formic acid and/or formate even in the presence of a non-limiting concentration of (I). Also claimed are: (1) a process for producing formic acid and/or formate, comprising culturing a bacterial strain as above under anaerobic conditions in a medium containing a C source comprising (I) and an N source preferably comprising yeast extract; (2) a culture medium obtainable as above and having a formic acid or formate content above 10 g/l, preferably above 20 g/l; (3) a process as above where the formic acid is extracted or purified in the form of a volatile ester, especially ethyl formate, and (4) formic acid and ethyl formate obtainable as above.</p> |
