Domestic gas fire with open-hearth effect

A rectangular metal tray (2) is enclosed at the top by a perforated silicon carbide ceramic-fibre plate. The number and size of perforations in the divider plate are reduced at the centre, above the gas inlet (3), to ensure an equitable distribution of gas. Little or no primary air is supplied to the burner so a flickering flame (4) is produced. Ceramic 'logs' placed above the tray glow when heated. A flameproof window is placed in front of the burner.
