<p>A door handle (152) is pivotably mounted for rotation within a backing plate (154) between a horizontal door latching disposition and an inclined unlatching or door release disposition. A return spring mechanism urges the door handle (152) towards and into the horizontal door latching disposition from the inclined unlatching or door release disposition. The return spring mechanism has two coil springs (176, 177), each of which is compressively engaged between a fixed first abutment (178, 179) and a movable second abutment (174, 175). Each second abutment (178, 179) is provided on a washer (162) which is rotatable with the handle (152). Each first abutment (174, 175) is defined by an apex where two spring-accommodating channels or grooves (170, 171) formed in the backplate (154) meet. The abutment apices (174, 175) are fixed relative to the direction of rotation of the handle (152). Each channel (170, 171) has a first linear or straight portion (172, 173) extending from the apex (174, 175) and is continued by a part-circular portion within which said second abutment (178, 179) is arcuately displaceable. The greater part of spring (176, 177) movement thus takes place within the straight portion (172, 173), thereby reducing wall friction between channel and spring, providing improved efficiency of operation of the return spring mechanism, and enhancing spring life.
