PURPOSE:To perform fast, continuous, and high-level orientation control through extremely easy and simple operation by specifying a bending direction when ferroelectric liquid crystal is oriented by bending deformation. CONSTITUTION:When the ferroelectric liquid crystal sandwiched between two flexible substrates is oriented by bending deformation, the bending direction is slanted nearly by the tilt angle theta of the liquid crystal or 90 deg.-theta from the optical main-axis direction (orienting direction) of the substrates. In another way, the longitudinal direction of the substrates is slanted by almost the tilt angle or 90 deg.-theta. In an actual device, a liquid crystal optical element 1 is heated by a heating device 4 to a temperature T1 and moved between two rotary rollers 2 and 3 which are held temperatures T2 and T3, thus orienting the liquid crystal. At this time, the tilt of the bending direction of the substrates by the two rollers 2 and 3 to a direction perpendicular to the main axes of the substrates is set to theta or 90 deg.-theta and the temperatures T1 - T3 are set properly. |
