PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To rapidly develop purifying capacity of catalysts situated upper stream and downstream by a method wherein a catalyst situated downstream is rapidly warmed up by increasing an oxidation reaction heat in the catalyst situated upper stream. SOLUTION: A second catalyst is arranged downstream from a first catalyst located in an exhaust pipe. It is decided by a deciding means 21 whether or not the first catalyst is partially activated and it is decided by a deciding means 22 whether or not the second catalyst is in a state before activation is effected. From the deciding result, a control means 23 effects control so that before the first catalyst is partially activated and the second catalyst is activated, at least one of unburnt hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide in exhaust gas and oxygen are increased.
