PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To generate a smooth and sharp multi-level font without providing the memory of a large capacity by detecting a prescribed feature pattern from a binary pattern and attaching gradations to picture elements for constituting the binary pattern corresponding to the feature pattern. SOLUTION: A CPU 208 reads characater codes stored in an intermediate buffer 209 for one character and a character pattern corresponding to the character code is generated in a character pattern generator 204. The generated character pattern is outputted to a font cache area 207, the character pattern is scanned and a multi-level font pattern is generated. The generated multi-level font pattern is written in a frame buffer 210 as a printing image. In this case, by scanning the font pattern, the feature pattern is detected and the gradations are attached corresponding to the kind of the feature pattern. |
