PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To relax electric fields at the fore end parts of cylindrical or columnar electrodes and to prevent generation of a spark and abnormal wear of the electrodes by shaping the fore end parts like spheres, in a water rheostat for a load. SOLUTION: Three electrodes 1R, 1S and 1T are so provided in a water tank so as to be in the relationship in disposition wherein they are positioned at the apexes of an equilateral triangle respectively, and water 2 is put in the water tank. Each of the electrodes 1R-1T has a structure wherein a sphere 1-2 is fitted to the fore end of a cylindrical body 1-1. By using these electrodes 1R-1T, the concentration of an electric line of force at the fore end parts 1-2 of the electrodes 1R-1T is eliminated and the concentration of an electric field is relaxed. Even in the case when city water or industrial water having a low specific resistance (2000-5000Ω-cm, 20 deg.C) is used, according to this constitution, generation of a spark and abnormal wear of the electrodes 1R-1T are prevented.
