<p>An apparatus for manufacturing sheet material coated in stripes comprises a spreading knife with a masking device pressing on the material in front and continued under the knife to the rear of the knife. As shown in Fig. 3, blades or wires 3 which comprise a spreading device are secured by brackets 7 to a knife 1. The blades extend in front of the knife and to its rear edge. The blades cause the coating material applied to the sheet material 2 in front of the knife to produce stripes of uncoated material. An upstanding member may be <PICT:0788547/III/1> secured to the ends of the knife to prevent the coating material extending beyond the knife and forming part of a trough for the coating material. The sheet material may be woven, knitted or felted and the coating material may comprise natural or synthetic plastic, resin, or rubbery material such as cellulose esters or ethers, rubber or vinyl polymers, polyethylene or nylon. A preliminary coating may comprise nitrocellulose or a polymer film forming substance. The stripes may be straight or sinuous.
