The nickel-chromium-iron alloy resistance wire (1) is laid in zig-zag between multiple layers of mica paper (2), saturated with a non-organic binder, e.g. aluminium chromium phosphate. 8 to 12 0.01mm thick layers are used on each side. Paired metal support plates (4), sandwiching the covered element, are screwed together (5), exerting considerable compressive force. External fins (6) improve heat dissipation. The overall plate length (8) is limited to 40 times the element's overall thickness (7). In a typical convection heater, the element is mounted vertically in a ventilated case with appropriate controls. A forced circulation fan is optionally included. Optionally, the element is helically wound over layered mica on a cylindrical former, mica-covered and clamped by a split finned metal tube support.
