Hydrocarbons are hydrocatalytically refined and a major part of the hydrogen sulphide contained in the liquid products is removed therefrom by blowing out using the gases used or produced in the process, the remainder of the hydrogen sulphide being removed from the products by washing. The catalysts used are those resistant to sulphur. If fresh gas is used in the process, it may be pretreated as described in Specification 766,625 [Group IV(b)] e.g. by contacting with catalysts such as oxides and sulphides of metals of the 6th group, e.g. molybdenum, tungsten and vanadium, with or without oxides and sulphides of other metals, e.g. those of the 8th group such as cobalt, nickel and iron, or carrier substances. The gas enriched with hydrogen sulphide may be recycled to the residual gas or to the fresh gas. Gases referred to are hydrogen, coal gas, coke oven gas, low temperature carbonization gas and water gas. Hydrocarbons referred to are petroleum hydrocarbons or those produced by coking, low temperature carbonization or gasification of fuels such as mineral coals, brown coals or oil shales. The hydrocarbons may be hydrofined at a pressure of 35 atm gauge. The refined products may be washed with caustic soda solution. |
