The detector has its coil (2) held at the required angle relative to the handle (1) and the terrain and consists of a crossbar (3) connected to the coil at one end and held inside a vulcanised tubular friction bush (9) which fixes into a bearing (4) at the bottom of the handle (5). The bush has a flange (10) on one side which engages with a notch (11) in the bearing to prevent it from turning. To fix the cross bar, and thus the detector head, at the required angle, a tensioning screw (8) acts on a slit (7) to reduce the diameter of the bearing and exerts pressure on the bar through the bush. Both bush and bar can be exchangeable components. The system permits a firm connection at any angle but will not seize up after long use.
