Wash tower for flue gas desulphurisation system

A flue gas desulphurisation plant, incorporates a wash tower with an absorption zone (2) and a distribution manifold (7) supplying wash liquid to spray nozzles (5), spraying in an upwards direction within a wash fluid sump (1). The nozzles are positioned under the flue gas entrance (3) and are each connected by an immersed pipe section (11) with the distribution manifold (7). Preferably the sump contains a horizontal grid (13) of flow baffles which separate an oxidation zone above the grid from a reaction zone beneath, operated at elevated pH value. The flow baffles are formed by tubular displacement bodies witH gasification devices between them to form the oxidation zone, the pipe sections to the spray nozzles being attached to the displacement bodies, which also act as the distribution manifolds
