The invention concerns an airbag system for protecting vehicle passengers. The airbag system comprises a plurality of sensor modules (11) which are connected via leads (1a) to a remote control unit (5). The control unit (5) controls a vehicle passenger restraint device, such as, in particular, an airbag. Each sensor module (11) comprises a current source (35) controllable by the output signal of an acceleration-sensitive sensor (30). The output signals from the sensor modules (11) are transmitted in the form of analogue push-pull signals or in the form of a pulse sequence to the control unit (5).
