Automobile side impact protection passenger restraint release system

The release system uses a sensor (1) incorporated in a vehicle side panel for delivering a signal in response to a pressure increase, compared with a threshold value for releasing the restraint when the threshold value is exceeded. The pressure increase signal is used to provide a mean pressure signal compared with a second threshold value and a difference pressure signal compared with a third threshold value, to allow the restraint to be released when both the latter threshold values are exceeded simultaneously.
